How Long After a Tattoo Can You Have a Bath

Keeping your tattoo safe during the healing process.

Taking a relaxing bath after getting a tattoo may sound tempting, but it’s essential to wait until your tattoo is fully healed before soaking it in water. At OSCO, we’re here to guide you on how to care for your tattoo during the healing process and explain why avoiding baths is crucial for preserving your new ink.

Why Avoid Baths After a Tattoo?
A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound, and submerging it in water can cause several issues:

  • Increased Risk of Infection: Bathtubs can harbour bacteria that may enter your tattoo, leading to potential infections.

  • Prolonged Healing Time: Soaking your tattoo can soften scabs and delay the healing process, potentially causing uneven or patchy healing.

  • Ink Fading or Blurring: Excess water can disrupt the tattoo ink, leading to a less vibrant or smudged design.

When Is It Safe to Have a Bath?
It’s recommended to wait at least 2–4 weeks before taking a bath, or until your tattoo is fully healed. By this time, the scabs should have fallen off naturally, and the skin should no longer appear raw or irritated. However, healing times can vary depending on the size, placement, and individual skin type.

How to Protect Your Tattoo If You Must Bathe
If you find yourself needing to bathe before your tattoo is fully healed, follow these steps to minimise risk:

  • Keep the Tattoo Dry: Cover your tattoo with a waterproof bandage or cling film to prevent water exposure.

  • Limit Soaking Time: Keep your bath short, avoiding prolonged exposure to water.

  • Avoid Harsh Products: Steer clear of bubble baths, bath oils, or any fragranced products that could irritate your skin.

What About Swimming or Hot Tubs?
Swimming pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water should also be avoided during the healing process. Chlorine, salt, and bacteria in these environments can harm your tattoo and increase the risk of infection.

Signs Your Tattoo Is Ready for a Bath
Your tattoo is likely ready for soaking when:

  • The scabs have completely fallen off.

  • The skin feels smooth and no longer sensitive.

  • There’s no redness or irritation around the tattooed area.

Our Advice at OSCO
At OSCO, we recommend sticking to showers during the initial healing period. Showering allows you to clean your tattoo safely without exposing it to prolonged moisture. If you’re unsure whether your tattoo is ready for a bath, our team is always here to provide personalised advice.

While waiting to take a bath after getting a tattoo requires patience, it’s a crucial step in protecting your new artwork and ensuring a smooth healing process. By following proper aftercare guidelines, you’ll help your tattoo stay vibrant and beautiful for years to come.
