Can You Shower After a Tattoo
Everything you need to know about showering with a new tattoo.
After getting a tattoo, you might wonder when it’s safe to shower and how to do so without harming your new ink. At OSCO, we’re here to guide you through the aftercare process, including tips on keeping your tattoo clean while it heals.
Can You Shower After Getting a Tattoo?
You can shower after getting a tattoo but it’s important to do it the right way. Your tattoo is essentially an open wound, so proper care is essential to prevent irritation, infection, or damage to the design. Avoid soaking your tattoo or exposing it to high-pressure water, as this can interfere with the healing process.
How to Shower Safely with a New Tattoo
Wait Until the Bandage Is Removed
Your tattoo artist will apply a protective bandage after your session. Leave it on for the recommended time, typically a few hours to 24 hours, before showering.Use Lukewarm Water
Hot water can irritate your tattooed skin, so stick to lukewarm water. Gently rinse the tattoo without letting the shower stream directly hit it.Choose a Mild Soap
Use an unscented, antibacterial soap to clean your tattoo. Lather the soap in your hands and gently wash the area using light circular motions. Avoid using washcloths or sponges, which can be too abrasive for healing skin.Pat Dry, Don’t Rub
After showering, pat your tattoo dry with a clean, soft towel or paper towel. Avoid rubbing, as this can irritate the skin and damage any scabs forming.Moisturise Afterward
Once your tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of a tattoo-safe moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated and promote healing.
What to Avoid While Showering
Soaking: Avoid baths, swimming or hot tubs until your tattoo is fully healed (typically 2–4 weeks). Prolonged water exposure can damage the tattoo and increase the risk of infection.
Harsh Products: Stay away from scented soaps, scrubs or exfoliants, as these can irritate your skin and prolong healing.
High Water Pressure: Don’t let the shower stream directly hit your tattoo, especially in the early days.
Signs of Proper Healing
During the healing process, you may notice some redness, peeling or scabbing. These are normal and part of the body’s recovery. Showering properly will help maintain the health and appearance of your tattoo.
Showering after getting a tattoo is not only safe but also essential for keeping your tattoo clean and promoting healing. By following these simple steps, you can protect your new ink and ensure it looks its best for years to come.
